Moab 5 mile run...

So beautiful after running...good thing it's blurry!!! Gotta love the cellphone pictures!

James and I AFTER the race...the cellphone is all we had with us!

...so, this time last year I was finishing my first half-marathon. I didn't break any records, but I did finish the race 15 minutes faster than I was even hoping to. Well, I decided to train this year and try to beat my time from last year. OK - I had the INTENTION of training to beat my time from last year. As it turned out, life got a little crazy, I had a knee injury in May, and I just couldn't find the desire to train like I should. I was at a class one night when a friend said, "I am giving myself permission to run the 5 mile instead of the half." These words were truly inspiring to me. I was feeling completely stressed about HOW I was going to do the half, but I felt like a loser just THINKING about doing the 5 mile instead. After hearing these words, I thought, "Who am I trying to impress? What does it matter? Two years ago, you couldn't even run a mile!" (You see, I started a jogging class in January 2007. My first race was the Moab 5 mile in March 2007. Then, in March of 2008 I did my first 1/2 marathon).

So, I gave myself permission to run the 5 mile and my awesome hubby came with me. I was feeling really good (and beating my time from last year) until I hit mile 3...then I felt like I hit a brick wall. James was so encouraging, but I still managed to yell at him. When he said, "You're doing great. You can do it." I simply YELLED back, "No I can't." Well, I did it. I finished the 5 miles in UNDER 50 minutes. That beat my time from 2 years ago (March 2007)by 15 minutes (that was the first time I had ever raced). Anyways, I was feeling a little down, because I really wanted to do a 9:45 minute mile or lower, and I ended up with a 9:55 minute mile, but, again, I thought to myself, "Who are you trying to impress?" So, I am now giving myself permission to be proud of myself. I finished the race in the top 3rd and that is better than ever before. So, good for ME!!!

On a side note - I just found out that I have a complete tear of my ACL, a meniscus tear, and my cartilage in my knee is thinning...all from an injury over a year ago. So, while thinking about all this running, I also have to be proud that I did it on a "bum" knee! Anyways, that is all for today!

You should be really PROUD of your self. I probably couldn't of made it a block. It's kinda sad how hard we all are on ourselves. It was really fun visiting with you at the dentist the other day. Thanks for being so nice and for the invite to your blog.

Good Job! I think running down the block is impressive. I'm sorry about your knee, but it does make it extra cool that you finished the race even though you had a "bum" knee.

Wow! I can't even run up the block in under an hour!! John is training for the St.George marathon, and if he gets our basement finished in the next couple of years I told him I would train for the 1/2. You blow me away that you have done so much already all on your own. Today you are my hero!

I think you did great! I've been running off and on for the past few years and it is tough getting over injuries and stuff. I have yet to break the ever elusive 10 minute mile mark on anything over a 5K, so I am so impressed with you!...especially with that injury!

ouch, ouch, ouch! But good for you! I think you are awesome. And the first thing I thought was how lovely you look after running (and you said what I was thinking, even if you were being sarcastic). I am so proud of you. And James, too.

Way to go Beck!!! You've inspired me:) I am going to train for a 1/2 marathon that is in October in California. I started the other day but now the crappy weather hit (I hate running inside, well I really hate running anywhere). We'll see how it goes, I can't even run 1/2 a mile yet!!!
